What You Should Know About Online Language Classes

Contributed by: Daniel Cohen

Online language classes have got to be one of the toughest ways to learn a foreign language. Although it is possible, personally I do not recommend it. I am native speaker of Hebrew and I also tutor Hebrew professionally, so I understand the strengths and weaknesses of online languages classes.

Please don't misunderstand, I do believe that it is possible to understand the foundations of grammar, and possibly some of the vocabulary, but online language classes are just not the most effective way to learn a foreign language. But when you are determined to take one of these classes online, there are a few essentials that will help you learn.

The Most Important Piece of Online Language Classes

When you enroll in online language classes, you should be assigned a conversation partner. At least one conversation partner is absolutely indispensable for learning a foreign language, no matter what the language is. Even when your objective to learn how to read a foreign language, a conversational partner is still beneficial. They will be able to get you used to speaking in a foreign language which will help you think in that language.

It is not possible to fully understand a language unless you will be able to think in it. You need to be able to get away from translating it into your native language every time you hear a word. Inevitably you will miss out on shades of meaning.

Although I criticize online language classes, when you are motivated and determined, you could successfully learn a language online. But even if they are free online language classes, before you enroll you need to be able and willing to invest the effort needed to learn successfully.

It is understandable that there are many people whose only way to study it is through online courses. They don't have the time to commit to taking a foreign language class at a local high school or community college, or don't live in an area that offers foreign languages classes. When it comes down to the crunch and there are no other means, then give online language classes a chance. Otherwise it would be a shame to miss the opportunity especially if you have a passion for other cultures, and other languages.
