In The Pursuit of Online LPN Classes Offered?

Want to get into the field of nursing but don’t know where to start? With the shortage of nurses that we have in our country, you would expect that there would be online LPN classes offered everywhere. Becoming a License Practical Nurse, commonly referred to as an LPN is the first step and so many “would be – could be” students would love the flexibility of being able to take online lpn classes.

With a career in nursing, your options are seemingly endless. Becoming a nurse doesn't just mean that you will work in a hospital. There are several other community, office and business settings where nurses are needed. There are too many nursing programs and too few nurses out there to fill the need.

But if you need the flexibility of online lpn classes to get you started, I believe that you are out of luck. At the time of writing this article, I have yet to find lpn classes online. There are many types of online nursing degrees, but I do not know of any lpn courses online.

Typically LPN programs are offered at a local community college, vocational or technical school or even your local hospital. There is quite a bit of lab work involved in an LPN program and this is the main reason why lpn classes are not offered online. Some community colleges may offer certain components of the course online with scheduled on-campus lab classes.

After Your LPN: What Next?

After you have received your licensed practical or vocational nursing license, there are many options to specialize through online courses. A variety of nursing programs are available for training at various levels.

The next level is an associate degree nurse (ADN), which prepares LPN’s with the skills and knowledge required to become licensed as registered nurses. After which, if you wanted to continue your education in Nursing, you would pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN). A BSN requires a more extensive curriculum, including arts and sciences and nursing management and leadership training in a variety of settings.

A BSN RN may then choose to progress with a Master of Science in nursing (MSN) and specialize as a nurse practitioner or nurse anesthetist. A doctorate level is also available, as a PhD in nursing. And although you may not be able to find lpn courses online, many online institutions offer the other various levels of nursing education.

It goes without saying that more education and more experience will open more doors to more professional opportunities. With more advanced nursing positions also comes a higher salary. Nursing is a hard job, and sometimes can be a thankless one also, but the rewards are many and the opportunities are endless. Possibly one day online lpn classes will be as common as the other online nursing programs, but until then, contact your state board of nursing to learn your study options for approved LPN programs.
